Regenerative Medicine Q&A

What is regenerative medicine?

Regenerative medicine uses the body’s natural cells to support healing in orthopedic conditions, musculoskeletal injuries, and after orthopedic surgery.

All healing begins with stem cells and platelets, which activate and regulate the process and regenerate all the cells needed to repair and rebuild tissues.

The Dallas Limb Restoration Center specialists use those same cells in regenerative medicine, harvesting them from your body and turning them into injectable treatments.

How does regenerative medicine heal?

Here’s where stem cells and platelets come from and how they promote healing:

Stem cells

Stem cells live in your body throughout your lifetime. These cells self-replicate and produce new stem cells that develop into the many cells needed to rebuild tissues.

Each type of stem cell has a specialized role. For example, hematopoietic stem cells develop into all the cells needed for blood and bone marrow. Another type, mesenchymal stem cells, are vital for orthopedic treatments.

Mesenchymal stem cells regenerate muscles, ligaments, tendons, cartilage, bone, and collagen. They can also develop into blood vessels, nerves, and skin cells.

Your provider extracts mesenchymal stem cells from excess body fat (using liposuction) or bone marrow (using a needle to withdraw marrow from the hip bone). Then, they cleanse the tissues and inject the cells into your damaged tissues.

Platelets (platelet-rich plasma)

Platelets are cells in your blood. When an injury occurs, or disease develops, platelets circulate to the damaged area and release growth factors.

Growth factors activate and accelerate healing, regulate inflammation, promote new tissue growth, and recruit stem cells.

Your provider produces injectable platelet-rich plasma (PRP) by separating the cells from a blood sample.

What conditions does regenerative medicine help treat?

Stem cells and platelets support healing in most body areas, but they’re especially effective for conditions such as:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Bone healing
  • Muscle and ligament injuries
  • Tendonitis (Achilles tendonitis, tennis elbow, and others)

Regenerative treatments are especially beneficial for reducing inflammation and healing wounds.

Am I a good candidate for orthopedic-related regenerative medicine?

The experienced team at The Dallas Limb Restoration Center are experts in regenerative medicine for orthopedic injuries and conditions, and well-qualified to determine whether you may benefit from it.

They complete a physical exam and consider your diagnosis, previous medical treatments, and overall health before deciding if you’re a good candidate for PRP or stem cells. If you are over 60, stem cell treatment may not be recommended, but other treatments are available.
